“I have received the letter from his lawyer, I will not apologise,” said Muhyiddin at a press conference here.
He added that he had handed the letter to his lawyer for further action.
Yesterday, Anwar demanded the deputy prime minister apologise and retract his statement made at the opening of the Sri Gading Umno division meeting.
A similar demand was also made to Utusan Malaysia, which reported the statement yesterday.
The PKR leader also demanded RM100 million each from both parties in damages caused by the statement.
“That was the statement I made, as reported,” said Muhyiddin.
The Umno deputy president reportedly called Anwar the biggest traitor to the struggle of the Malays. He also accused the PKR leader of spreading lies in an attempt to discredit Umno for its stand in defending the special rights of the Malays and the monarchy.
Muhyiddin also questioned Anwar’s sincerity for not raising the matter when he was in power.
Umno leaders and the stable of newspapers under its control have been consistently playing the race card in an attempt to shore up support among the Malays.
The lynchpin of the Barisan Nasional has also campaigned hard for Malay unity talks with PAS, in a move to drive a wedge between PAS and its Pakatan Rakyat partners.
