(Bernama) - The Umno Youth today challenged PAS to quit the opposition pact as the party was no longer respected by its coalition partners.
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the opposition pact not only lacked the spirit of camaraderie but also showed that it did not respect PAS’ contribution.
For instance, he said, in Penang, PAS’ sole representative was not given any place in the state executive council line up.
“Now that we are facing a state by-election in Permatang Pasir, and it is understood that PAS will contest the seat, I challenge PAS to demand that the party be given a place in the executive council,” he told reporters after opening the Bukit Mertajam Umno delegates’ meeting here today.
He said that if the DAP-led Penang government still refused to give PAS any position, the party should pull out of the pact.
He said that the latest development in Selangor and Penang showed that PAS was not respected by its Pakatan partners.
“I want to see just how far PAS is committed to the pact. We want to see if PAS is willing to sacrifice its honour,” he said.
The situation was different in Barisan Nasional (BN) where component members were given places in the cabinet despite winning only a small number of seats, Khairy said.
On the Permatang Pasir by-election, Khairy said, the Umno Youth machinery was being prepared but what was important was unity among Permatang Pauh Umno leaders to ensure that the machinery could be deployed smoothly.
The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent assemblyman Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman of PAS due to a heart attack on July 31.
