Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has asked the government to be sensitive to the feelings of the Indonesian people, or risk bi-lateral ties further souring.
In particular, he pointed to the three currently red-hot issues – the territorial dispute in Ambalat, the sensational separation between Indonesian socialite Manohara Pinot and Tengku Muhammad Fakhry, and several unresolved cases of maid abuse.
“Indonesia is an important neighbour just like Singapore, and the government must act. It is also important for the police to investigate all reports fairly and ensures justice,” Anwar said at the sidelines of the PKR special congress held on Saturday.
Anwar was also asked about a visit by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who is winding up an eight-day tour of the country. Kuan Yew is due to meet PAS spiritual adviser Nik Aziz Nik Mat this weekend.
According to Anwar, it was important that Singapore realised that it should build relations not just with Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno-BN but also with the Pakatan Rakyat.
He expressed confidence that at the end of trip, Kuan Yew would be better able to form an accurate opinion of the state of play in the Malaysian political scene.
