Kuala Lumpur July 31, 2009: Penang Umno is ready for a by-election in Permatang Pasir following the death of incumbent Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman of PAS today. State Umno liaison chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is Defence Minister, said Umno could mobilise its machinery, especially the one in Permatang Pasir, at any time.
Umno would ensure that the Permatang Pasir seat under the Permatang Pauh constituency is wrested from the opposition, he told reporters here today. Though not denying that he was worried as it was the first time he was heading the state Umno in a by-election since his appointment on April 24, he said it was a test for him and a gauge of Umno’s strength.
In order to steal early votes and to ensure PAS members crossover to Umno, he extended his condolences to the family of Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman. Mohd Hamdam was the sole PAS state assemblyman in Penang, and had held the seat for three terms, first winning it in 1999.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid dismissed as rumours, claims of internal problems within the Umno machinery in Permatang Pauh. The Umno vice-president also said that he would go to the ground to monitor the situation and ensure that problems are
solved quickly. He believed that the allegations were made by the opposition to cause chaos to the state Umno divison.
Meanwhile, commenting on the by-election, Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Jalil expressed confidence that the Barisan Nasional would win the seat. "We will mobilise Wanita (Umno), and we are going there to win because the people have learnt that the opposition is all talk but no action," she said.
The Mighty Pen says: Since Shahrizat says that she will mobilize Wanita Umno, and by doing so the seat will be won by Umno, we can only presume that she will use beautiful Umno women to win this bye-election. How else can they win? We say it’s ok, bring them, as the prettiest of the whole Umno lot cannot be better than the ugliest of the Pakatan women! It will not come as a surprise that future Malaysian bye-elections and general elections will be fought solely based upon the external beauty of a candidate!
