KUALA LUMPUR - A MUCH trumpeted effort by the Malaysian government to be more transparent in its procurement policies has instead caused red faces after several glaring errors were highlighted on the Web portal.

In the latest discovery, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry had to issue a correction to the value of a contract awarded to an information and communication technology firm for a security system upgrade.

The contract's value was corrected from RM3.6 billion to RM3.6 million on Thursday.

This is the fourth correction to the two-week-old MyProcurement portal which was set up by the Finance Ministry to be more transparent in awarded tendered projects.

The ministry has defended the errors as minor mistakes that occur in any new project. Deputy Finance Minister Chor Chee Heung said the website was still new, and every ministry was rushing to update the portal which could lead to minor mistakes in the data. - APF
